01Overview

A full-stack platform for Vista Learners, an education consultancy in Kannur: a public site for prospective students, the Vista Compass™ online assessment, and a CMS that lets staff run the site without a developer.

02Context

The consultancy evaluates study-abroad candidates with an MCQ assessment. The results feed real admissions conversations, so the exam has to be trustworthy.

03Problem

An online exam that grades or times itself in the browser can be gamed. The consultancy also needed to manage destinations, courses, FAQs, testimonials and blog content themselves, without developer involvement.

04Solution

Vista Compass™ runs with server-authoritative timing and auto-submit, and grades only on the server. Rules like one attempt per exam and national-ID uniqueness are enforced at the service and database layer. A student portal supports email/password and Google sign-in; a role-based admin CMS manages content and exports reports.

05Architecture

  1. 1

    Public site

    Destinations, courses, blog, FAQs, testimonials

    • Next.js 14
  2. 2

    Student portal

    Registration, dashboard, attempt history

    • Google OAuth2
  3. 3

    Exam engine

    Server-authoritative timing, auto-submit, server-only grading

    • NestJS 10
  4. 4

    Admin CMS

Content, media library, role-based access, audit log, exports

    • Excel / PDF export
  5. 5

    Data

    Constraints enforce attempts and identity

    • Prisma 5
    • MySQL
The client renders the exam; the server owns the clock, the answers and the grade.

06Engineering decisions

  1. A

    Server-authoritative exams

Timing, auto-submit and grading all happen on the server. The browser never sees the answer key and can’t extend its own clock.

  2. B

    Rules at the database layer

One attempt per exam and national-ID uniqueness are constraints, not UI checks — so they hold even if someone bypasses the interface.

  3. C

    Honest placeholder content

Stats, testimonials and legal copy that still need real client data are explicitly flagged in the documentation rather than filled with invented figures.

09Technology

  • NestJS 10
  • Prisma 5
  • MySQL
  • Next.js 14
